53/11 at 35 is UNDER 100 rpm……………… can easily accelerate in a gear until ~130 rpm

With a 53/11, he’s only turning over 100 rpm at 37mph. At 120 rpm, he’s moving 45mph which is about the max speed of the sprint. What’s so hard to believe?

Specialized doesn’t list the McLaren anymore but in 2011 you had to add another $6,000 for a total of $18k for their complete bike. Probably another $1,000 minimum for Extras like bar tape, bottle cages and computer

If that is in face the ‘McClaren’ model frame.. the Frame alone retails for around 10-12k, since it is pretty much tested by mclaren themselves, then with parts youre looking at about 16-18k

Yeah… I have hit 40 mph in a sprint on USA junior gearing before or essentially a cyclocross setup, 45/12. that said… that is a stupid high cadence, but Mark comes from the track. They are used to that and frankly, most people generate peak power at cadences at or above 120 rpm. (Not to say it is sustainable for long… but it is a sprint sustaining is not an issue)

So what gearing do you think he uses? Don’t forget he has to ride a whole stage to get to the sprint finish. Too high and he’s not going to make it. Like GNC say, have you seen his cadence?
Stick your bike on a home trainer, zero everything (no resistance, gradients etc) select 53/11 and try to reach at 120 rpm.
You just have to look at the number of times this guy comes from nowhere without a train. (Just as well now he’s at OFQS – sorry).

Google any reputable cycling gear calculator. If you put in 53/11 at 110rpm using a 700×23 tire, you’re talking upwards of 40mph. As far reputations and rumors are concerned, 110rpm is allegedly on the LOW side of Cav’s sprint cadence. There is talk that he will spin up to 125rpm (would yield 47mph).

Not at all, have you seen his cadence?

53/11yeah right. above 37mph not enough gearing to accelerate the way he does. i call bluff

Correct me if I’m wrong but anyone one else think that the fork looks like an SL4 one? Doesn’t look that aero-shaped to me.
Also, I thought Cav LOVED his anatomic bars? Why the change to traditional?
